Elizabeth May's response to our Quest for Electoral Reform and Proportional Representation

2012-07-12

Dear Electoral Alliance,

Thank you for your letter and for the research you’ve provided. I agree in principle with the recommendations contained in the Law Commission’s 2004 report, and believe that it represents a viable option for electoral reform in Canada.

I am very encouraged that your group has already begun to take steps towards electoral reform in anticipation of 2015, and fully support your efforts to reach out and build support among the opposition parties for this goal.

To this end, I am happy to begin researching the possibility of introducing a Private Members’ Bill on electoral reform, and will direct my office to collaborate on this issue with any other Member of Parliament who expresses interest in your initiative.

Success on this issue will ultimately depend on the willingness of all of Canada’s opposition parties and MPs to put country ahead of party, and so I thank you for the crucial work that your group is doing towards building this support.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth May O.C., M.P. Member of Parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands Leader of the Green Party of Canada
